How much does stump grinding cost in Auckland?
Pricing depends on the stump's size, species, location, and access. Small stumps start around $120–$175, with larger or multiple stumps quoted individually. Free quotes available. Also see our cost estimator tool. We have a minimum fee of $285
What affects stump grinding pricing?
The size of the stump impact the pricing, measures from the widest part of the stump that is above ground. Other things that impact the pricing are the number of stumps. If there is clear access or not and species of the tree.
Does Stump X remove mulch after the stump grind?
By default, the stump grindings are usually left onsite and raked back into the hole, where they can naturally decompose or be reused as garden mulch. If preferred, we can also remove excess mulch and waste material as part of the job
Can you access tight back gardens?
Yes, no problem. Our main stump grinder is 900mm wide at its widest point. So we need 1 meter clear access to get to the stumps. If this doesn't work, we can also use smaller narrower stump grinders to grind the stumps.
Can you grind stumps on steep sections?
Yes a lot of gates are over 1 meter wide so we can fit through it no problem. If the gate is narrower than 1 meter we can use a smaller stump grinder.
Do you service South and East Auckland?
Yes, Stump X provides stump grinding services throughout South and East Auckland including Papakura, Takanini, Drury, Manurewa, Flat Bush, Pukekohe, Howick, Beachlands, Botany, Half Moon Bay and surrounding areas. We regularly complete residential, commercial and development site stump removal projects across South and East Auckland.
Will tree roots continue growing after stump grinding?
In most cases, stump grinding stops further tree growth because the stump is removed below ground level. Some aggressive tree species may occasionally produce small shoots from remaining roots, but this is uncommon once the stump has been professionally ground out.

Yes, Stump X provides stump grinding services throughout central Auckland including Mt Wellington, Remuera, Mt Eden, Onehunga, Mount Roskill, Ellerslie and surrounding areas. We regularly complete residential, commercial and development site stump removal projects across central Auckland
Do you travel out of Auckland?
Yes, we can travel out of Auckland to Waikato, Coromandel and North Auckland for larger jobs. Please don't hesitate to get in touch.
How deep can you grind down the stump?
We will grind the stump down to between 75mm and 100mm below ground level. This gives you enough depth for topsoil and grassing after the stump has been ground down. We can grind the stump down deeper if required, this will be discussed at time of booking.
Can I plant grass after stump grinding?
Yes, for the plant to have enough depth this will normally mean the stump will need to be ground deeper than the normal 75mm to 100mm depth. We can grind down to 300mm below ground.
Do you do commercial stump grinding or just residential?
Yes we work with commercial clients, schools, facility management teams to help them with stump removal on commercial properties. We also work with residential customers across South, East and Central Auckland.
Do you provide health & safety documentation?
Yes, on request we can provide health and safety paperwork as required. We have detailed task analysis to cover off all the risks on a stump grinding job to ensure the work if completed safely and efficiently.

Do I need to be home?
No, most of the time we complete the stump grinding without the home owner home or present as long we can access the property.
Is stump grinding cheaper than stump removal?
Typically yes, stump grinding is cheaper that stump removal. With stump removal using a digger / excavator you also need to pay for the stump disposal and backfilling the hole left by the stump with material / soil.
Can you grind stumps near fences, retaining walls, or concrete
In many cases yes. Our compact tracked stump grinder can access tight spaces and work close to fences, garden beds, and retaining walls. We assess each site individually to avoid damage to surrounding structures or underground services.

Is stump grinding better than stump removal
Stump grinding is generally the fastest and most cost-effective option for removing unwanted tree stumps. The stump is ground below ground level while the root system naturally breaks down over time. Full stump removal or excavation is usually only required for construction or major landscaping works.
